Fun With Onions

I’ve been doing a lot of cyber-housecleaning lately and thought I’d share the fruits of my labor with you guys. If you are at familiar with Tor and the many clandestine websites that it hosts, you know that .onion sites are frequently shut down or redirected. (For those of you unfamiliar with .onion, it’s the extension that Tor sites use instead of .com or .gov, etc.) Some sites are seized by the government, others were only scams to begin with and shut down once their reputation spreads or they’re operator incarcerated. Tor website directories are outdated faster than your computer needs an upgrade. It had been a while since I last updated my list of potentially interesting .onion sites, and since I recently came into possession of a fair amount of bitcoin, I thought I’d take this opportunity to do a little research and rid my list of any outdated URL’s, while eagerly adding all the new sites that have popped up since my last exploration of anonymous websites. The deep web has grown significantly since I bought by first vial of LSD from the Silk Road. While still relatively small in comparison to the World Wide Web, the deep web has assumed the role of the public Internets nefarious evil twin. While some activities prevalent on .onion sites are admittedly reprehensible, it does offer an intriguing look into a black market underworld of illicit marketplaces and forbidden contraband that can cause one to windowshop for hours at a time. Those who have yet to witness first hand the taboo offerings made available by the protection of the anonymous Internet browser are often shocked by the brazen exhibition of  highly illegal goods and services, unveiled and laid bare for the world to see – and to bid on for that matter. Bitcoin held tight in their sweaty little virtual hands, buyers browse online listings in a manner similar to ebay or Amazon. Sellers are rated and critiqued on the quality of their service and merchandise. Forums provide a platform for shop owners  to make announcements and patrons to compare experiences. The entire ordeal has an air of normalcy, cloning an online shopping experience that we’re all familiar with, until you consider the nature of the transactions. (For a more in-depth look into the first infamous deep web marketplace, The Silk Road, see my three part Silk Road series that kicked off this blog – HERE). While I’ve only taken advantage of the scheduled substances for sale, just about any prohibited good or felonious service is available for purchase. Weaponry, fraudulent credit cards and financial accounts, new identities, stolen merchandise, all manner of pornography, even assassination services are boldly advertised to eager black market buyers. While the government strives to curtail many of these services, there is always a successor waiting in the wings, ready to supply the demand of an increasingly hungry market. Of course the cyber-protection that makes this all possible also provides con-artists equal protection. Scam shops come and go regularly, making it necessary for all buyers to do their due-diligence and verify the credentials of any site, and seller before initiating a transaction. Lucky for you, I’ve done the research for you and to the best of my knowledge, all of the shops I’ve included in my personal .onion directory offer legitimate, albeit criminal, services.

While online marketplaces may be the bread and butter of the deep web, it offers much more than just a platform for illegal transactions. There are sites for social networking, network security, news, torrents, online forums, secure email communication, financial protection and just about anything else you can find on the public Internet as well. In my list I include a variety of .onion specific search engines and website directories. Check these out and do a little browsing. You’ll find much more than narcotics and porn passwords for sale.

Before you dive in and start playing around in the deep web, there are few things you should take into consideration. Remember, you need to use the Tor browser to access any .onion site. To download Tor, visit their website, www.torproject.org. To ensure full anonymity, especially if you plan on engaging in any illegal activity, a VPN is required as well. I use Private Internet Access. It’s affordable and easy to use. Take your privacy seriously, always use a VPN with your Tor browser. To communicate with anyone on the deep web, you’ll need to have a PGP key as well. Most all sellers require all their email to be encrypted to protect their communication from prying eyes. Purchases on the deep web are almost all done with the cryptocurrency, bitcoin. Bitcoin transactions are also anonymous, protecting you and all parties involved from detection during financial transactions. Don’t expect to pay with Paypal or credit card for any transactions. They aren’t secure and there is too much risk for the seller. All this protection is in your best interest. So build a cyber-fortress around your online activity and browse worry-free. One more word of caution. The deep web attracts all kinds of shady people. Unfortunately, a large community of child pornographers have also made the deep web their secret abode, taking advantage of the anonymity to exploit children undetected. If you do enough browsing you will run into these types of sites. But they are clearly labeled and you can avoid entering them. To protect your eyes from unwanted images that will haunt you for life, don’t click on anything if you don’t know where it leads.
